Map of Purton

  • We recommend you take a walk around the village

  • The High Street with several interesting stone built houses including The Angel Hotel this is probably the oldest public house in Purton, built in 1702 then via Church Path to view Purton Manor House with the Tithe Barn and nearby Purton St. Mary's Church

  • The oldest part of St. Mary's church is the nave, which dates from the 12th century. When in the 13th century the roof was raised the pillars of the nave had three feet added to them. In the 14th century the central tower and spire, and the chancel and chapels were added. In the 15th century the west tower was built on, making St. Mary's unique among the English churches, in having a central tower and spire, as well as a western tower.

Photograph of Purton St. Mary's, as featured in the Wiltshire Federation WI Calendar 2000 and also included on a beautiful wooden jigsaw, commissioned in 2001 by WFWI and produced by the Wentworth Jigsaw Company
